If you love animals please click on to An Animal Shelter Story to the left under my favorites. It is hard to watch and this movie makes me cry each time that I view it. It is important that we pass on this website to others so together we can make a difference. Please Spay and Neuter your pets.

Zena, The Lost and Lonely Stray
Zena is this beautiful black lab mix that we recently rescued. Zena will be a permanent part of our sanctuary because of her inability to walk correctly. This rescue effort is still on going for the partner Zena was traveling with that is still lost as a stray dog in our area.
We were mowing hay at a vacant farmstead near our country home. As we were rounding the corner with the mower we saw two very pathetic dogs emerge out of the corn crib. The one dog looked directly at me as I tried desperately to coax her to me. Both dogs scared and dirty took off across the bean field. I ran after them but I didn't get very far before both dogs disappeared in to the tree line. We could tell that the one dog was moving awkwardly. We set food out for both dogs but they didn't come back to the crib.
We notified area farmers and to our surprise there was many sightings of these dogs. With each sighting the lame dog looked worse and worse. We were getting frustrated as we tried to arrange a capture in a shed that we were told that the dogs were visiting. We left food in the shed and fenced off the front of it to make it more difficult for the dogs to escape.
Several days pass and we see both dogs asleep in the shed. As we tried to approach slowly the one dog got up and took off like a shot. The other dog laid still. We approached the dog laying down and the dog tried to get up, she flipped she flopped and she screamed in pain but she couldn't stand. The dog finally gave up the fight and allowed us to slip a sheet under her to act as a stretcher. We put the dog in the car and proceeded to find the other one. The lost dog came back to eat several days in a row but we were unsuccessful in catching her.
It has been almost one week since we last saw the lost dog, she has not been back to eat. We have contacted every local animal control and nobody has seen her. We have newspaper ads, featured articles but no luck. I can only hope that somebody, somewhere will read our flyer or see our posts and call with good news.
Zena is getting a little stronger with each day. We had X-rays taken but they are clean. Since there are no broken bones we are taking her to Purdue University to have an MRI performed to find out why she has trouble walking. The MRI will cost us $1,000.00 and that's the minimum. Wish us luck as I will eventually post a link to Zena's fundraiser and keep everybody updated on the situation.
June 8th, 2007. We received a phone call last night about the missing dog. Our neighbor saw the dog on his way to work about 4 miles north of our home. We drove around this morning and talked to area farmers again. Hopefully somebody will see her soon and let us know.
July 5th, 2007
We took Zena to Purdue University. Zena's diagnosis is a recent spinal ebolism. Zena is now on the road to recovery. Everyday gets a little better for her. Zena is becoming quite at home with us here on the farm and comfortable with our other animals. Zena seems to be a very happy and loving dog with alot of inner strength to survive.
Still no sign of her traveling companion.
